Friday

i have been a "Waldorf mom" for many years now.  even now that my children don't attend a Waldorf program, many of us moms still keep in touch.  some have gone on to become teachers, some sell things they learned to make when our kids were small.  Waldorf  encourages parents to make toys for their children.  i made several fabric dolls for Emma, making clothes for them out of fabric scraps from the studio, and knitting them scarves and sweaters from bits and pieces laying around.  my knitted animals in those days were less successful.  i still have the bunny that looks like an armadillo.  when i first moved to New York, Mary went to a Waldorf playgroup near Prospect Park.  i was the oldest mom, and one of the only knitters.  i began to have mothers over on Wednesday mornings to knit toys for the children.  many of us are still friends and remember those mornings as the highlights of our week.  i saw this kangaroo at my favorite New York yarn store- Downtown Yarns.  i have always had a soft spot for knitted animals, and this one was so charming, i had to make one for each little girl.  Emma saw them, and wanted one, too.  she was in her punk phase, so i made it black with a pink stomach, which makes it look a bit like a penguin.
