one of the vintage patterns i found at my neighborhood yarn shop was for this little baby cardigan. it is made in such a way that i had no idea what i was knitting until i was more than half way done with it. it was such a funny way to shape a garment. starting with the back

horizontally then moving on to the front vertically. it was such a fun surprise when i finished. i have tried unsuccessfully to do this shape on the knitting machine, so for now, it remains only a sweet memento of Frances' first years. i made this with variegated sock yarn and some vintage star buttons from my collection.
